Try this site; it seems helpful:

http://members.aol.com/theloego/byzantine/

You could also such search your topic and land on several actual church web pages that would probably be able to answers your questions.

Avoid Wikipedia like the plague - goodness knows who puts stuff on there!

Cheers!! :)

Your question is confusing. I have to assume that you mean the religion of the Byzantine empire, not Byzantine rite Catholics.

A Latin Rite Catholic would notice the difference in the byzantine rite because, to begin with, the language is different. They used primarily Greek, while the roman Christians used latin.

Secondly, the leader of the church was the byzantine emperor. Justinian imparticular claimed both political and spiritual authority. They did have patriarchs in Jerusalem, Antioch, Alexandria and Constantinople.

Icons were and are a useful took for prayer in Eastern christianity. the Byzantine emperors tried to ban them briefly in an controversy called iconoclasm, but eventually they came back into use.

a.) Yes, a Roman Catholic person would notice, there are different customs and such. The church has a structure more like the catholic church, than protestant churches.
b.)It depends on what time period you are talking about.
c.)Byzantium was where the "iconoclasm" took place, which was basically where religious symbols were removed, because they thought that it was sin to portray holy figures humanisticly. Even before and after the iconoclasm, figures lost 3-dimensional detail, and looked "cartoon-y."

I hope this helps, I'm an Art History student, not a Theology Student, so you may need more help there, but the Byzantines felt that comparing humans to God was blasphemy.

I was raise Byzantine Catholic.

It resembles more Eastern Orthodox than Roman Catholic

Very Iconoclastic

Very ritualistic

Still believe in the sacraments like a Roman Catholic. Roman Catholics would recognize it, but would be a bit more formal.

They have their own patriarch. The Pope, is patriarch of the Roman Catholic church. Honestly I don't know the current Byzantine Catholic patriarch.

Byzantine Catholics live in the Middle East from Jerusalem through Ethiopia.. and then up through Greece and Turkey, even into Russia and Slavic countries. There ceremonies are very close to Roman Catholic and extremely close to the Eastern rite Catholics aligned with Rome. Many of the rites are said in Greek rather than Latin or the venacular.
I believe the leader's title is the Patriarch of Constantinople, and yes they have many icons: for more information go to:

On Byzantine Christianity, you ask ...:

A) Would a catholic notice the difference? if so, what would they be.
YES. ALL the ceremonies and rites are performed somewhat differently, so as you would notice.

B) who was the leader of the church?
The Eastern Rite or Byzantine Church is led by an ARCHBISHOP in ISTANBUL (I think), not the POPE in ROME.

C) How did they deal with icons.
The Eastern Catholics put a heavy emphasis on the ICONS or RELICS of the SAINTS, while the ROMAN CATHOLIC Church places less emphasis here, and centers on the life, death and RESURRECTION of JESUS CHRIST.

Good luck.....

The Golden Period of the Byzantine Empire is considered to have begun in 641 AD. The golden period was marked by massive border changes, constant warfare with Arabs and to a lesser extent Bulgars, a final split between the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Churches and a renaissance in the arts. The final period began 1025 AD and ended with the fall of Constantinople in 1453 AD. This period was marked by the loss and reconquest and then loss of Constantinople, constant civil war and the splintering and fall of the Empire. If you study the establishment of religion by Constantine you will have a big clue also !!! Enjoy the hunt for info !!!

"The Holy Roman Empire was neither Holy, nor Roman, NOR an Empire" I don't know who to quote on that, but it's a good quote to look at when trying to understand how the Byzantines are portrayed in history.... The Byzantine's were wannabes.
