If your source is accurate, I think Rush is ignorant, misguided and perhaps a racist. As he said, "if you didn't decide to be black, renouce it." First of all who decides to be born?? Mr. Rush should renounce the fact that he is white, if he didn't DECIDE to be white...but anyways I'm tired on the attacks on Obama because of his skin, white, black, purple or red, listen to the mind of the person and not the color of his skin.

It's hard to say what Rush was trying to get at. Obama is saying very little about race per se. I really think he is serious about winning and wants to be known as a candidate, pure and simple, not "the black candidate." Of course, he will have a natural base to appeal to, whether he wants it or not, just as Clinton will appeal to women, Romney to Mormons, McCain to military veterans, etc. Since the object of running is to win, preferably without selling your soul to the devil, all of these candidates will have to walk the tightrope of accepting and perhaps even appealing to these natural constituencies without alienating the rest of America. The problem Obama and Clinton face is that their physical appearance sends a message every time they make an appearance. But to me it is heartening that a woman and a black are being taken seriously as national candidates for the first time in U.S. history.

Another thought: on TV tonight, some commentators were wondering why the commentators who are so adamant that race shouldn't matter are talking so much about race. I'm skeptical enough to think the following: many extremely conservative commentators are scared to death that Obama might beat Clinton for the nomination. For them, Clinton would be a godsend. Obama, on the other hand, presents them with problems they don't want to deal with and he is much less of a target if only because he has so much less of a record to defend.
