My co-workers called an ambulance on me in 2005. It was less than a mile trip. I was told that I could write a letter speaking on financial hardship and they would let it go. But now they have sent it to a collection agency. It's a $500 bill and I don't have health Insuracnce. What can I do?

Heath Insurance is not affordable in the US, if you do not have it covered by your job.

that is awful
You must appeal now ( it is a pity you left it so long )
Still ---- write that letter NOW
ask to be let off due to financial hardship,
and explain all the circumstances , then and now
send a copy,
To the ambulance service

to the collection agency .

and a social worker ( if you have one )

and a (free) solicitor / attorney

if you fail and they still want you to pay

you will have to pay, a s much as you can afford,
each month
( still keeping sufficient living expenses )
If you offer a small sum regularily ,
they will have to accept it , gladly----
unless they are fools .
( you cant get blood out of a stone )
= if you haven't got it , neither will they get it .

Good luck
i do hope it gets sorted well for you

More free loader companies. We have to pay for a service we don't want. I swear from now on, if I am able to talk at all, I will refuse to get into an ambulance. They had no business calling an ambulance for you. How did they know you could afford it.
Another reason for Universal Health care in this Country of free loader companies and doctors that take advantage of the 'working' man.

Try to reach an agreement with the collection agency when you may so much a month. You don't want to get you credit ruined and it's not worth it for $500. You probably needed an ambulance if your co-workers called it. You need to get health insurance asap.

The opportunity to show hardship is still there, but way overdue. Contact the ambulance service and speak to the financial manager. They may not speak to you if it's in collections. And the collections folks don't care what your 'excuse' is. Why did you wait over a year to resolve this? That is beside the issue. Do the above see what happens. In the end, you may have to just pay it.

You need to pay the bill. You could have refused transport, however, you choose to take the 1 mile ride int he ambulance. You wanted the ambulance to transport you, then you need to pay the bill.

Tell it to the collection agency, or if you don't care about your credit, just let it slide. Good luck trying to get a credit card or buy a house or get a job or rent an apartment etc.....
