Hello. My fiance and I are moving to Silicon Valley and I am looking for advice on the best areas to live. Ideally, we would like to be able to walk to a variety of bars, restaurants, and shopping. Something inbetween urban and residential suburbs. We also have two small dogs, so somewhere near a dog park would be ideal (but not necessary). Any suggestions?

Palo Alto is a great area. It has an awesome downtown with bars and great restaurants. The downtown is also very dog friendly with some restaurants having tables on the sidewalk so your dog can sit next to you. Also, Stanford shopping center is near by and its an open mall where you can walk through with your dogs.

Downtown San Jose is a great area - upscale apartments, nightlife, restaurants, museums. all sorts of attractions. Also, it's one of the safest metropolitan cities in the United States. I lived in San Jose for two years while I went to school and I frequently walked around at night by myself or with a few friends and never felt in danger. The police are a strong presence in the area so you always feel safe.

My friends lived on Santana Row there. They lived in a cool apartment (very luxury building). They were right in the middle of all the bars and restaurants. They also have a dog so I know they had many places to walk their dog in the area.
