Good deeds and kindness can often be contagious because people usually feel good (or at least a little bit better than they did before) after people are kind or do something nice for them, particularly if the people who were kind or who performed the good deed didn't know them or didn't have to do it for some other reason (i.e. customer service in a store). People who feel good are either more likely to do something nice for someone else because they're feeling good and/or because they want to pass that good feeling along. People can quickly realize that doing kind things for other people for no reason or personal gain will make them feel better as well. It's a win-win situation for everyone.

They shame people into being better. When we get something we think we don't deserve, we are obligated to give back in at least equal proportion.
