When I put the car in drive, reverse, 2, 1, L, and even Neutral, the tires wont move! The car jerks back and forth, trying to move but doesn't because the tires aren't allowing it to move. There are no screeching noises at all. It appears that all tires seem "locked' as if something were preventing the tires from turning. Help! What should I do? any suggestions? Would i be able to do some sort of work on it myself? I would absolutely appreciate all the help I can get. Thanks alot -- from a nice female just trying to be self sufficient without taking her car to a mechanic that will just charge her a rediculous amount of money for something that perhaps may be simple, and she may be able to do some work on it herself.

Either the parking brake is on, or you've had a major brake system failure.

The Devil is in the details. Is the vehicle within driving range where you can inspect. How many owners. Any maintenance records. Is the original owners manual included. I would have a Toyota mechanic put it on a lift and inspect underneath carefully. There are rubber "boots" that hold certain lubricants vital to the drivetrain that tend to crack and leak with age. Has the Air Cond plumbing been switched out to accept the new type refridegerant. Do the belts and hoses look well maintained? My advice is to go ahead and find newer model with fewer miles. Older cars, even Toyotas with that many miles that have not been well maintained can turn into a money pit and leave you stranded. Investing more money now can mean saving lots of money and trouble in the future.

Hey Guys,
It's cold outside, If the E-Brake was set it may have locked up the brakes (frozen). If that is so you might have to wait until the sun shines on the car to warm it up. My Pick up does this also.

Often, older cars emergency/parking brake cables seize and you have to pull them off from the rear. Not a DYI unless your very handy.
