Subtitled films whats all that about?

If I wanted to read a book I would have read a book.

And I don't mean subtitles for the deaf.

Well, maybe you should learn French, Spanish, German, Chinese, Japenese and a little Ukraine and then you would be set.

well some countries make films in their own language. many of these films (not in English) are exceptionally good and often better than those being mass produced by a place called Hollywood. so we can see how good these foreign actors are a translation is provided on screen. sometimes even English films have English subtitles when being shown in America. (shame we didn't have subtitles on the Rocky films as the American drawl is a struggle for English ears.)
so if you want to miss out on some fantastic movies (Pan's labyrinth, La Balance, devil's backbone, la strada, old boy, talk to her, irreversible stick with Hollywood. if you want to read a book read a book.

You can't really think that the only good films that are ever released come from either England or America!

Korean Cinema is amazing and in fact many American films made today are remakes from Korea!

Japanese cinema produced such greats as 'Dark Water' and 'The Ring'

Chinese cinema is another great and the film 'The Departed' is a remake of a great Chinese film called 'Infernal Affairs'

Jackie Chan, a total legend, did most of his best work in Chinese cinema!

I find that America cannot produce the same kind of suspense and horror as the east. Japanese cinema really like their shocking films!

French Cinema is another great.

One of the Biggest films of 2006 was the Spanish film 'Labyrinth del Fauno, El' or 'Pan's Labyrinth'

I would really recommend giving films with subtitles another go!
Trust me - you will forget they are there after a while!

Oh Adam - you obviously didn't watch 'Hero' the other night on TV - what an experience - subtitles and all! You wouldn't get that from a book, and we all know how dubbing can ruin a film.

Its so that you can broaden your horizons into foreign cinema without needing to learn another language before you watch it. If we didn't have subtitles, I wouldn't have enjoyed the following, superb, films -

- The beat that my heart skipped
- Amelie
- A very long engagement
- Life is Beautiful
- The Eighth Day
- Delicatessen
- The Passion of the Christ

No one's making you watch them, you could just stick with your silly Will Ferrel comedies that only use one syllable words for you.

Dicky, you missed out Cinema Paradiso! Films are not just made for the English speaking world, and subtitles are far superior to dubbed.

Sometimes directors like to make movies in the native tongue of the location where the movie is set (for example, Passion) and in order to create the effect for others to enjoy in other countries, they need subtitles. . .

I put teletext on when I am pretending to listen to someone and not watch tv! Also if there is noise around. Sometimes I might put them on when watching the sound of music so i can sing along!!

The main purpose is so deaf people can know what's going on too.

Ex: my b/f is from India, I am American. I don't speak or understand Hindi, but subtitling allows me to watch Hindi (Bollywood) movies with him. And allows me to understand what's happening in the movie.
