Interesting question. There is a possibility that it could have been an offshoot of a more common life form. This newer (missing link with no common link) may have failed to adapt or reproduce enough offspring to keep that species going. So it just died out, not leaving enough numbers behind to link it with anything.

Or, it could be alien to our planet, possibly some lone survivors of an anchient spacecraft crash, that wandered aimlessly until they parished.

The kind of question that makes you ponder the mysteries of life.

Anyone who says there is a "missing link" doesn't understand the fossil record.
