There is a big difference between an EXCUSE and an EXPLANTION.
EXCUSE: you give some lame *** reason, not accepting any responsibility for your actions.....in which case, you will be untrustworthy, and it's doubtful your job will last long. He will regret the decision to have had you transferred.
EXPLANTION: You give the reason you overslept....your alarm didn't work, you forgot to set it, you were sick, whatever is the TRUTH and explain it won't happen again. You might look a little "flakey" but in the long run, he won't remember why you were late, he'll only remember that you took responsibility for it, and corrected the mistake.

Wow! Tough break! I would say, tell the truth. Your boss may admire you for that. And he may remember you next time as the honest girl in the company.
But...
We aren't always honest. So here's the thing...
Say that your clock way set back three hours!!
or
You can say that the snow was a problem. The traffic is also a great excuse. BEST OF LUCK!

As a supervisor, I can tell you the reason is not that important.
What is bad is that you didn't call and that you aren't returning his phone calls. You need to call him right away and tell him that you had a personal emergency, you are sorry for not contacting him sooner, and it will NOT happen again.
You better prove youself to be a valued asset to his team, or else he will not hesitate to can your butt for the slightest thing next time.

wow 3 hours is a lot of time... you NEED to call in. i would say something about how your car wouldnt start and you could just now get a ride. something along those lines.... but nothing is going to sound good since you are so late. dont think it will make a difference what you say. i know a lot of people who have gotten fired because of this, you just need to call and talk to him. dont avoid it it will just make it worse. so good luck.....

You probably SHOULD tell the truth, but if you're not up for that, tell them you ran over a dog. Then you had to track down the owner. You couldn't find the owner so you had to take the animal to the vet. It worked for me!

Woops. Why are you here? You should have set an alarm. Call you boss, tell him you are sorry, and it will never happen again. Then get your butt into work.

"Well I was driving to work, you see, and an alien popped out in front of me. Can you believe it! An alien! Well, he invited me to lunch, but I said no, but he dragged me into the restaurant! He forced me to eat with him! By the way, you look great in that tie, Mr. _boss's name_!"

nothing that you can even remotely come up with is going to excuse the fact that you are 3 hours late for work.
