Actually, I believe both were intended when it was named this. It was made to sound like you are smart for shopping at the mart for pets. Petsmart. It's both.

I think it's PETSmart because it's the mart for pets I don't think it's PETsmart because it doesn't necessarily make you smart to shop there.
