I like studying Freud, because his life and work were so interesting. He was a huge part of the evolution of the discipline of psychology, so if you want to understand psychology you have to learn where it came from.

There are still some Freud devotees practicing, however not much of Freud is useful to counselors these days. Cognitive psychology, which is grounded in three decades of scientific research and technology (Freud's thought was mostly theoretical, never proven by real scientific methods), is the prevailing method today...and far more effective. It's based on neuroscience, which explains how the brain works to create mind and human psychology.
