I know its her first name but was there a reason for it besides that.

The reason for the "L" on her clothes was two fold. First it was because it was the first letter of her name and second this way no one else would wear her clothes unless your name started with an "L". I thought she mentioned that on the show once but I could be wrong. Great idea if you didn't like others wearing/taking your clothes, eh?

Very simply, it was her trademark, her "gimmick" if you will. And, here it is almost 30 years later, and we all remember that Laverne wore an L on her shirt. Good gimmick if you ask me. :)

In the late 50's and early 60's, it was a custom to wear monogrammed clothes. I think that show was set in this time period.

Trademark, 50's, and some girls wore letters then gave their boyfriend a letter and even some guys had letters if they didn't have sports letters.
