I am a criminal defence solicitor with 3 years PQE (post qualification experience). I recently moved down to my home city where the work is less but there is more opportunity to actually focus on the cases. I have also become a solicitor-advocate which means I can deal with cases in the Crown Court as well as the magistrates court like a barrister. The down side is that I worry about the level of work in the firm and the effects of the Carter Reforms [these are government cut backs to criminal legal aid which will start to have effect in or around April 2007]. I have also met a lovely girl who I've fallen in love with and wants to stay in this city. I want to know the best course of action: i.e. stick with criminal defence in this city or another one? change discipline - i.e. move to regulatory law? or do something else?
