I am a criminal defence solicitor with 3 years PQE (post qualification experience). I recently moved down to my home city where the work is less but there is more opportunity to actually focus on the cases. I have also become a solicitor-advocate which means I can deal with cases in the Crown Court as well as the magistrates court like a barrister. The down side is that I worry about the level of work in the firm and the effects of the Carter Reforms [these are government cut backs to criminal legal aid which will start to have effect in or around April 2007]. I have also met a lovely girl who I've fallen in love with and wants to stay in this city. I want to know the best course of action: i.e. stick with criminal defence in this city or another one? change discipline - i.e. move to regulatory law? or do something else?

I hv no knoledge about the field of law so I won't be able to help you there. Regd the girl you met, I want to tell you that long distance relationships have every chance of working, if both are committed to each other, and know that u both will eventually come together in one place. In this scenario, perhaps I might stick to the place, learn as much as I want to learn in my career, and get to know the girl better...to establish a solid foundation of love and trust. But if you feel like your heart is directing you to do something....go for it. Listen to your inner voice. Listen to your passions. All the best.

DON'T drink hot chocolate, it contains caffeine like tea and coffee, so it will not help you to sleep. Go to the chemist because you can purchase an over the counter sleeping pill called Restart. If you are not on any other medication the chemist will sell you it no problems. It really does help. Try a nice warm bath, and maybe some relaxing music too. A friend of mine tenses up every muscle in her body and then slowly relaxes. Does this a few times relaxing more each time. Good luck, i sympathise with you as i have trouble sleeping too.
