the concept of a middle class is and always has been a myth. America is a classless society. Carnegie, Rockerfeller, Bell, Edison, Oppenheimer, and also the Coke family came from humble beginings. They are wealthy. The only thing stopping you from making the money you want to make in the USA is your will to work and your ingenuity to work smart. (when I say you I am speaking in the general and not attacking you personally).

If you are born poor, you can become rich. If you are born rich, you can become poor. To say "middle class" is a joke. Median income homes is a better phrase, and more accurate in an economic sense. When phrased like this, and given proper analysis, one sees that rising waters raise all boats. The average median income of American homes rises yearly. It has since the end of Carter's Malaise.

As with any bell curve, it will go through flucuations of sharp incline to plateau. Invention and technology plateaus lifestyle, and stagnation crests the wave. The so called middle class is not disappearing, anymore than the Rome Report from the 70's was accurate in saying that the world would face mass starvation in the late 80's, as well as experience and end to energy supplies.

It is one of those urban legends whose fire is stoked by populists, but does not stand to accurate analysis.

Stocks will plummet. Recession/depression will set in. The greedy neo-cons will lose money and businesses will close. Inflation will triple and the well off will be pulled down to the status of middle class earners.

The rich will pay more. The question is with the increase in poverty are the rich going to have a little extra to pay for food and shelter when taxes go up.
