Protein (from meats etc) will make your urine darker, as this is broken down into amino acids (for your body to use for repair/ growth) and excess amino acids are then broken down to urea (which gives the yellow colour in urine).
Your urine should be pale though- if it is dark yellow it means you aren't drinking enough water. Drinks like coffee dehydrate as caffeine is a diuretic (makes you wee more). Try and drink a few pints of water/dilute squash per day.
Urine colour can also be affected by the colour of the things you eat- blackberries and beetroot both have colour pigments in that can make your urine red/purplish (you'd have to eat a lot of them though!).

the colour of your urine reflects the amount of fluids you've been drinking....your body automatically adjusts how much water is released from your body by monitoring the water content..the kidneys and hormones (esp ADH-anti-diuretic hormone) play a huge part in water balance...if you've drank a lot, more water is expelled (light coloured urine). If you're not drinking enough, fluid will be kept within the body(darker urine). you're urine will be most concentrated first thing in the morning. you can't see vitamins in the urine, some foods like beetroot may cause the urine to be discoloured. make sure you're drinking plenty...recommended 2 litres per day(not alcohol, caffeine etc).....

If you drink alot of water, it will be less concentrated
and not look as yellow or smell as bad. However,
If you eat certain things, (like asparagus) will make your urine
smell and dark, Also medications can change the color and smell of your urine. Vitamins and antibiotics will be noticed in your urine too, YOU WILL get a strong odor from these both.
Also the color of your urine can tell that you're not well, example, Very Dark, Coke Colored Urine alerts you that you're liver is having problems. If your concerned, See a Urologist. They can answer your questions truthfully.

No, as far as I know, the darkness of it is an indicator of how hydrated you are - or how much liquid you're losing. When you drink alot of alcohol, your body starts to shed it's water (not sure why, but anyway), so your urine is very light coloured and diluted. However, come the next morning, when your mouth's as dry as a pharoah's sock, your urine has the colour and thickness of syrup due to a lack of hydration.

I've had sports coaches tell me that it is determined by the amount of liquid your are intaking. Technically, if you drink enough water, it should be clear. If its really dark you are not drinking enough. However, drinking a large amount of water is best when you are also exercsing regurally.
The color probably also has to do with vitamins and such too.

Your not drinking enouph water. your body is dehydrated. Lay off the coffee, tea, juice, and soda and drink more water. the darker it is the more water you need to drink. A lt of water will lighten it up.And you will start to feel better

No, but it does tell you how much water you've been drinking or how much you need.
If it's dark, you need to drink more water. If it's light, you've drank a good amount of water.
