whats america's view on South Africa?

I'm South African and work in South Korea as an English teaher. I've met loads of Americans and all of them think South Africa is the best country to live in! That's after I showed them a video from back home. Before that, they didn't even have an opinion!

I don't know a ton about it, so my thoughts on South Africa could represent a random American's views I guess.
I think of: apartheid (sorry that's the first thing that comes to my mind), Nelson Mandela, I think of the interesting accents that South Africans have (to me it's similar to an Austrailian accent sort of), I think it's one of the most industrialized African nations, I think that it's odd that even though Apratheid was in effect not too long ago that gay marriage is already legalized, Zulus, nice people, I think of old European conquest, beautiful scenery, a place I'd like to see someday.

I am assuming that you mean the country of South Africa and not the region.
Well, in either case, the general consensus is;:
"Who cares, Americans can't benefit from their success."
This is not how I feel, but most Americans.
Think about it:
Have we lifted a finger to assist Zimbabweans who are dying under Mugabe's totalitarian Government. No, why should we, there is no oil there?
NOw, I am not a fan of war!
But, I am not a fan of complacency, either.
AMericans need much more education than you think.

Its on our minds a lot...lets see I thought about it in 1971 then again 1998 yeah its almost constantly on our minds here, and a friend of mine said to me the other day "that he's buying a new SUV "

Well i have never been there but my b\f is from there and what he tells me I cant wait to go. And what i have read on S.A I know there is a lot more crime there then in the US. But all in all i think that it sounds like a very nice place.
