Are you referring to the "Freedom Riders?" They were not protesting but were testing whether the Supreme Court ruling that bus stations could not be segregated was being enforced. They traveled into the south splitting into two goups when they arrived in Atlanta. The group heading into Alabama ran into trouble when the passengers were attacked at one station and then firebombed and beaten once they got back onto the road.

Not a very bright spot in American History....
