I had exactly the same on canon ip1500. It is chuck out or take back to shop. PC WORLD say its quite common for this to happen.

If you are in the USA, I would try to take it back to the store and exchange. But did you save the receipt and boxes. If not, go to say like Walmart. Buy another one. Save receipt and box. Then find out what return policy is. Some places have up to 90 days. Then on day 80 take your old one back with receipt and box and get your money back. This is a long way to get your printer working.

Now the paper jam display may be from two things. Unplug your printer and wait 1 minutes and plug back in again. If the jam display is still on, then you have to look inside and it will have a little paper caught somewhere. You may have to use a flashlight to look real close and good. Happened to my HP printer and there was a little paper hung up and took it out and good as new. Try that.
