that really depends on what you consider the true birth of hip hop. dj's began playing breaks in the early seventies, but the breaks were already there. plus dub artists had been using the same technique for years with reggae rather than funk, soul, and jazz. mc's started rocking the breaks shortly after, but james brown had been doing essentially the same thing since the fifties. for a quiz, i would say the seventies is the decade hip hop began because the separate art forms involved in hip hop; djing, mcing, breaking, and graf writing, came together for the first time and founded the roots of the culture.

Back in the 1800's when black people were slaves they were working in the fields and they wanted to keep their mind off being a slave so they sang and thus started hip-hop. but it really started being popular 1970's and 1980's
