Sport Utility Vehicle. But then according to today's standards, a stagecoach, a wagon, etc. could be an SUV. Now in the 80's the Ford Bronco, The Chevy Blazer, The Dodge Ram Charger were trucks, so why are people now calling the same type of vehicle an SUV, when they are built on a truck frame. Example, the Ford explorer is on a Ranger Frame. Everyone that like the HUMMER sorry people that's actually a Chevy Tahoe on some weird Steroids

As others have said, Sport Utility Vehicle.

It was the auto industry's way of marketing the strange not-quite-a-wagon, not-quite-a-truck vehicles they began coming out with in the early 1980's. It was a ploy to attract the in-city, more affluent customers tired of dodgy station wagons to cars they would normally never consider--and it worked beautifully.
