Originally the @ symbol was used for business stating that each item had a specific price (each at $5).

When email originated on the Internet (1971) the symbol was slightly renamed to be used to identify a person at a domain.

john@somewhere.com

This became read as the user john AT somewhere.com.

The "each" part as since been dropped from normal nomenclature.

Simply it means an email account at some domain.

The "@" symbol is the very first symbol to ever be transfered through the internet from computer to computer. It was originally used for goverment purposes only, as was the internet itself, to symbolize a location. After the interenet went public, email adresses and other online communications took over the symbol in the same manor....to point out a location. So to answer your question: the "@" symbol is to specify a certain destination...I want to send "johndoe" and email at(@) choosemeasbestanswer.com.....does this help?

Abderrazak ... Yes, it means "at." In the case of e-mail addresses, the "@" symbol separates the individual's e-mail ID (preceding the "@" symbol) from the domain/address for the server that is the host for the e-mail account.

In other words, if the e-mail address is "joe@yahoo.com", the e-mail account is obviously a Yahoo.com account and the individual's mail ID is "joe". When you combine them, this forms a complete e-mail address.

It is just a symbol. It is conventionally used for email addresses.

Someone says it is "at". Someone says it is "a sign".

It is shorthand for the word "at". But most people today probably don't know what shorthand is either, lol.
