I used for my daughter:
0 size P (preemie) diapers
2 medium packs of N (newborn) diapers
3 medium packs of 1's
2 1/2 medium packs of 2's
1 large box and one pack of 3's
and going on my 3rd giant box of 4's (she's 5 months old now)

My daughter was never small enough for size P diapers so I wouldn't advise getting any unless you have a family history of babies smaller than 7 pounds or are being induced quite early. Start with only ONE small package of P's in the case that you and your husband were both born very small, because you never know how fast baby will grow. You can always have your man grab another pack on the way home from work after baby is born.

Keep in mind that people always inevitably bring diapers to the baby shower so I'd advise NOT buying any until after your shower.

WalMart Parent's Choice diapers are WORTHLESS!! Well, they were for my daughter. She has a tiny waist and the elastic on the Parents Choice diapers woulndn't cinch it tight enough. Plus, every time she went #2 it squirted up the back and out onto her onesie! EVERY time!

Pampers Swaddlers worked awesome for my daughter. They are so nice and soft! They only go up to size 2 though so after that I switched to Huggies Supremes.

Luvs aren't good because they don't have stretchy tabs. Not adjustable at all!

White Cloud didn't impress me either, nor did the Babies R Us brand.

Regular Pampers were nothing special. Regular Huggies feel like newspaper! Ouch!

My best friend has a son and she has also tried many brands and keeps coming back to Huggies. She liked the Pampers Swaddlers for him when he was littler too.

My sister is a single mom and uses the White Cloud with difficulty for her 2 year old because that's all she can afford.

Hope some of this helps you! :) Oh, and CONGRATULATIONS!

EDIT: I notice someone has mentioned wipes below, and someone else has mentioned that you can get huggies and pampers coupons from the websites....
First on the coupons- I signed up, followed up, and tried again under a different name. I only got ONE envelope with ONE diaper coupon total from each company. If I'd known I wouldn't have bothered to sign up. I hear that in Canada you can sign up with Nestlea to get a really nice welcome package including diaper bag mailed to you though.
As for wipes- My daughter was allergic to the Huggies brand Sensitive skin wipes! Weird... She broke out in a full body rash, poor kid. She wasn't allergic at first; it started after using them for a month. Now I use Pampers Sensitive. They cost less than huggies wipes and are oh-so-soft! Just remember if your baby gets a rash it isn't necessarily from somethign you'd expect. It could be from something passing through breastmilk, disposeable diapers, wipes, shampoo, lotion, oil, butt cream, perfume you are wearing when you hold baby, laundry soap on your clothes when you hold baby... Hopefully you won't have this problem at all though. :)

Honestly, I prefer the Target brand diapers to the Swaddlers and Luvs that I was given. Grocery store brands suck here, but Target's are great. I've never had a blow-out in them, the sticky tabs can be opened and closed again numerous times, and they hold a LOT. My daughter is crawling and pulling up, and they take a beating very well.

My daughter was in size 1 until she was about 3 mos old. Then she outgrew them literally over two days. She's been in a size 2 since then (she's 7 1/2 months). Until your baby is here and you see how she grows (mine grows slowly as far as weight), it's hard to predict what you'll need the most of. My husband's coworker has a baby 2 1/2 months younger than my daughter, and he's already in size 3s. He was in size 1s for about a week.

The VERY well-off family I used to work for, who could probably afford the most expensive diapers in the world, used White Cloud diapers for their baby...I think that's Wal-Mart brand... just because they found that those worked the best for them.

If you can, buy a small pack of each brand that you're considering, and try them out for a couple of days to see what you like best with your baby. Once you find that out, check the weight limits for each size, and buy up size 2s, 3s, etc. NB sizes are worthless unless you have a small baby (regular size 1s usually start at 8lbs, but, obviously, if your baby is 7 1/2 lbs, they'll be fine). And some babies grow out of size 1s very quickly, so, you may not want to buy TOO many ahead of time.

I have all Huggies babies. I have been dirt poor and made the mistake of buying a cheaper brand and it was a mistake! It is worth scrounging the pennies for the Huggies. Right now my little one is potty training and so I have been using Huggies pull ups with her. I was short on cash and bought a really cheap brand and she broke out all over her bottom while she was sleeping. Diaper sizes vary also. A size 1 in one type of diaper is different from a different brands size 1. And which size works for your infant depends on the size and weight of the baby. You should have a pretty good idea towards the end of your pregnancy approx what the baby will weigh go with that. I would recommend starting out with newborn. They have the little cutout for the umbilical cord stump/belly button to be (LOL).I had a ten pound six ounce baby and he couldn't wear newborns so we just folded the front down around his belly button. And how many you are going to need will depend on how much your baby is going to wet, every child differs. I have five and none of them were the same. In short be prepared you will need LOTS! oh and wipes too. I use the equate brand pop ups shea butter. The smell is fantastic and they are a bit cheaper than the Huggies brand and just as good. I have tried others also and always go back to the equate shea butter.

Before born I buy 2 brands. Huggies and Drapper in size small.I didn't buy in new born diapers, cause we don't know the baby size. After using these two brands, I feel Huggies is better than Drapper. I did used for Pamper, but feel not very good. Now I also try to give my baby for the Mamypoko, this brand also good but more expensive.
So I using huggies for the day time and Mamypoko for the night time. ( If for new born, mamypoko need to buy in newborn size, cause the smal size is more bigger than other)

I personnally believe that I used more of the newborn-size 2......my son grew quickly, so i ended up having several packages extra of those sizes. When he was a newborn, i used pampers swaddlers, because the were shaped better and had a snugger fit. But once he hit about a size two, i started using the walmart brand. The work just as good as the pampers, and cost much less. My son was in size 4 the longest though....from about 14 months until about 26 months....He is now fully potty trained and has been for about three months now. Just be sure to save your reciepts. If you have too many, you can always return them for the next size up.

I would hold off on buying diapers ahead of time. My daugher used:
about 3 packs of NB diapers,
Size 1 for about 2 months
Size 2 for about 3 months
and she has been in size 3 ever since. and she is 10 months old and they still have room in them.

Pampers baby dry are wonderful, but very expensive
Wal-Mart Paretn's choice are okay, but the sizes run small. They never leaked for us, but my daughter grew out of a 3, but the 4's were too big.
Luvs - what we are using. They do not stretch, but they still fit her okay. Very cheap with $3 coupons and they have never leaked.
Huggies - I was not impressed. I do LOVE the Huggies overnight diapers though.

That is the only kind I have used.

Check with other family members on the size. My son was small forever, so I got away with more of the newborn diapers than most people. My daughter was average size and grew faster than my son, so we barely used newborn diapers.

I did have to change between brands regularly with my daughter, because she would get a rash if I used the same brand for more than a month. If sensitive skin runs in the family, you might have to keep an eye on this too.

I hated huggies. I mean HATED. I used pampers cruisers for a long time because I really liked the way it fit my daughter and kept her dry, but I got to where I really didn't like the smell. I have found that LUVS are the best. They have a nice powdery smell, keep my daughter super dry, and are great quality. I never have any trouble with them( I had some trouble with pampers tabs breaking as I was trying to put the diaper on....multiple times). The only thing I wish LUVS had are elastic like waists like pampers cruisers. My daughter also stayed in size 4 the longest.

My daughter has never had a leak in LUVS.

I really liked Swaddlers (by Pampers). Huggies leaked. Pampers baby dry are great but my son was pretty big and the straps(?) did not stretch far enough. As for sizes, it depends on how big your baby will be...I would buy 1's, but if you have a preemie you might do cloth diapers for awhile. You'll be saving $1600-2000 a year!

Pampers Swadddlers are best for newborns and they go up to a size 2. I have tried Parents Choice, Luvs Huggies and Pampers. At some point they all leak either pee or poop, but most often I use Pampers. Huggies don't have a lot of side coverage.
