check out the wikipedia article on quiz. Check out, as well, a dictionary such as websters, which should give you a very abbreviated etymology of the word.

EVERYONE SO FAR IS WRONG WRONG WRONG...

The word Quiz is actually trades in its origins to an irishman in the late 19th century.

He was drinking with his friends and they eventually had a bet that the man couldn't make a new word.

The man accepted the bet and for the next 6 months went about writting QUIZ on everything...

people obviously reading this had absolutely no idea what it was and started guessing what the word ment.

Given the responce of the people, the man later went on to say that Quiz ment asking questions...

that is the 100% truth on the subject, it is nothing to do with foreign languages which bear a resemblance...

dictionary.com corroborates the information on wikipedia that the word might have it's orgin from 1775–85 and meaning “odd person”; but goes on to say its origins are uncertain.
