How about people's addiction to the internet? There are many roads to take with that one.
ADHD - how it is now commonly diagnosed versus years ago when we were all just called "hyper".
The role mythology and folklore plays in literature today (could be interesting, but maybe too intensive if the essay is to be short).
Steroid use in sports.
How libraries are (sadly) becoming a thing of the past.
How foods effect us emotionally, or how about dependency upon food?
Ummm....
Censorship (in music or book banning, television...)
Alright, I'm going to stop there - I could go on for days. I hope you find a topic that interests you. Find something that attracts you and the words will flow like water, don't force a topic on yourself.
Good luck and take care! :)

Whew, you have it easy. Arguementive papers can be a daunting task if you don't know what your writing about. I suggest you start by thinking about something you feel passionate about, Sinc you have such an open topic this can be anything. Do you have any hobbies? Are you passionate about music or sports? Do you have an opinion on Politics or something like Capitol punishment? - Once you have picked your topic, state your opinion, take capitol punishment for example, your thesis, or main arguement can be the statement of that opinion such as Capitol Punishment is a viable punishment for murder or Capitol Punishment is wrong because it devalues the sanctity of human life ... Whatever your opinion is. Then in your paper give 3 reasons supporting your claim, answer the question WHY in these paragraps. Then in each paragraph use a small piece of supporting evidence from an outside source such as a magizine of good reputation, or expert testimony Then you have a paper.

for an essay like this, the important thing is that you like the topic and can write three to five paragraphs about it. the topic doesn't matter so much as clear organization and a goor "argument". choose something you believe in, an activity you enjoy, an issue that you think matters...

The essays I wrote involved topics like abortion, gun control, family farming and farm subsidies.
I hated compare/contrast essays.
