Yes it is.

In "disk Cleanup" when the line "Compress Old Files: is highlighted you may select the option box and specify how many days before a file is compressed. The default is 50 days.

"Whenever you want to return a compressed file to its uncompressed state, right-click it and select Properties. Click the Advanced button, uncheck Compress contents to save disk space, and click OK."

Yes-- it is okay-- I mean your not going to ruin anything at all
But, why would you not want to give your operating system some "elbow room" by the compression of old files---this feature was put into this activity for a reason---and the compression is done quite rapidly--- if you have an abundance of them-- compressing them will show a marked improvement in the smooth flow of activities on your system almost immediately !!!
