I understand that if a child is drunk in school he should be punished but what if a parent allowed their 16 year old to have a wine cooler with dinner on Friday night or a glass of wine at a wedding on Saturday...the tests that they will be giving these children shows if any alcohol has been in their system up to 80 hours prior...some schools are thinking of making each child take this test on Monday morning....the test is so sensitive it can even detect if a child has used Listerine.......do you think the schools have this right?

I think some people are missing the point...yes the school should punish if the children drink on their property or come to school drunk BUT this test would show what a child did up to 80 hours before comming to school that would include weekends in which they are not on school property...

If the test is as sensitive as you note, then I do not think schools have the right to test students for alcohol. Alcohol is shared with children, but not abused, in some cultures at family gatherings. Personally, I would not share alcohol with my children but if it's a part of a family's culture, then I don't think it's fair to punish a child and his/her family for that.

If a person drinks one wine cooler on friday or has one drink on Saturday they would not show up drunk on Monday. IF they are drunk on Monday its because they had too much to drink Sunday night or Monday morning.
Your liver metabolizes alcohol and then your body secretes the by product. This process does not take 80 hours. It would be impossible for alcohol consumed 80 hrs ago to be detected.
Yes they have this right-kids should not be drinking PERIOD!

"My Tommy doesn't drink, his school does breathilizers."
"Really, what about summertime and three day weekends?"
"He knows better than that."
"Then why do you need breathilizers at school?"
"For the other kids."
"What about the summertime and three day weekends?"
"Look, we know that some kids are going to drink, we are just trying to do everything we can to prevent it. What's wrong with breathilizers at school? You think that we shouldn't have any type of preventive measures?"
"No, I think we have plenty of preventive measures already. Kids aren't old enough to buy booze, plus their is a teacher in every classroom to monitor the kids. If that isn't enough to stop kids from drinking at school nothing is enough. We have to know when to draw the line and force individuals to be resposible for themselves, ESPECIALLY kids. If the only thing stopping someone from doing something is obsticles they will find a way around that obsticle.

If I'm a messed up enough kid to drink before school I am definitly messed up enough to bring the vodka in a aquafina bottle and drink it in the bathroom inbetween classes.

No, that is breaking the students privacy and even though alchohal is something a kid shouldn't go near. You never know, mabye they test for alchohal, and find that he smokes marijiana, and takes Nicoret. He won't want his parents finding out but it IS his choice and as long as he hasn't broken any specific drug related rules,
then he shouldn't get checked. Mabye not the best argument, but hey i'm a free liberal kinda guy.

no i don't think they have the right, not because it violates anything, but because it is the parents job to keep track of their children and punish them accordingly. i saw if a minor is found drunk, then fine the parent. obviously they left them alone when they were not mentally or emotionally ready to be left alone.

Yes, it's a school. Why should children be drinking at school. They should be punished for such activities!

for one it is still illegal for kids to drink behind their own doors (even if their parents let them) To the question no I think that drug/alcohol tests should be left to local law enforcers like police.

your right about the mouthwash. as for school rights, the drinlking law is a state law. whereas schools are usually city/county, so there is a grey area there. but , if it was my kid, test away.
