Conservation is a personal preferance, which can help the pocket books of those that practice it, as a national policy it is worthless. New sorces of energy must be found, not old tech that creates enthanol out of corn with the unentended results of pricing food out of the reach of many 3rd worlders, but geothermal tech using the heat of the earths crust to generate electricity and the building of more nuke plants. Also tap the natural gas in the great lakes and in the gulf of mexico to provide cheap energy while inovations are developed

I think that one of the main problems is that people are not educated enough on the subject. You need to talk to people in terms of money and what it will save them. For example, you can buy a nightlight for about $2.5 and it will cost you another $.5 per year to replace the 6 watt bulb. If you were to buy an LED night light, it would cost you $5, but would only use .3 watts and you would break even after 1 year. After that, you would be saving a substantial amount. This example assumes both lights are photovoltaic and run for the same amount of time.

Other than conservation, I would push for investment in the advancement of Solar Power as it is a renewal energy source. However, even the best solar panels right now are only 16.8% efficient and the payback (assuming your state has no energy credits/rebates) is about 65 years. The technology has to advance further before it is economically viable for consumer purchase.

In case you hadn't noticed, you don't get elected to be the President Of The United States without being very beholding to the very powerful oil interest lobby.

Any meaningful change to the energy policy of the US will never be initiated from the executive branch of government. It must come from the voting public who demand change through their elected Congressional representatives.
