this isn't so much about them trying to come in from the cold. they go to the trash for food, they go to the drain, particularly in the kitchen, for food and a damp environment, they go to the lights because they're stupid and think it's the sun. you should probably get a new trash can, for starters, one with a lid. if you can, you've gotta get your hand right down into your drains and wipe the entire circumference of the sides, everywhere you can reach. if you can, look into the drains and see if there's anything in them that looks like toasted sesame seeds. this is very gross, but when they lay eggs, they're gonna go for dark, warm, damp spots, and the drains are perfect. if you see 'em in there, wipe 'em off and rinse 'em down. it's very gross, i know. the key to getting rid of them is to eliminate the eggs before they hatch, and if you can't find where they're laying them, or if you can, but can't reach them, you've got to minimize the amount of food supply they can get. keep cleaning your drains and keep your trash covered and if you've got kids who, like mine, shed crumbs everywhere they go, keep up with the vacuuming. if they are laying in the drains, it'll only be near the top you'll find eggs or pupae, too far down it's too cold for them to survive, even if they don't get washed down right away. you can try plugging or closing the drains when you're not using them, that way, if they do hatch, they can't get out.

I had this problem once and called the exterminator who told me the only way to get rid of them was to hire him to set expensive traps ect. He also told me to look for any food that might be anywhere (under couch, behind fridge ect.) when a was on a cleaning frenzy I found downstairs in my sons bedroom closet a garbage bag with old food scraps from a family party that he did not take out to the trash. What a surprise those things were all in that bag and found there way upstairs to the kitchen, bathroom any food source.once I got rid of the bag the problem was over in a few days with out traps and stuff he tried to sell me to pour down the drains! Happy hunting!

Do you have bananas or fruit out in the open? If so,try to put them in a covered area.I know those gnats just love fresh fruit out in the open.

Fleas don't fly, they jump. If you have something that looks like little nets with wings it isn't very likely to be fleas.
