I am having a planned c-section in july and i am wondering if you have to have a catheter. I am prone to UTI's and am really sensitive so i dont really want a catheter. Is it manditory if i empty my bladder before the c-section?

Because even if you empty your bladder there is still urine in there. Most people don't fully empty their bladders, so when you have your epidural they will give you a catheter because you won't have any control.

Good luck.

During regular labor and C sections your body is put under the numbing effects of the medications. The eppie, if you choose for regular v, birth, and the standard medication they give you for C section emergency or not. Either way your body is blockign nerves, nerves and signals that tell you whether or not you have to go to the bathroom. So yes more than likely they will give you an catheter. Honestly with both my kids I barely even knew it was there, and afterwards it was the very last thing on my mind of what was hurting.
I"m sure if you talk with your doctor they may have other options, not sure what they may be, but a c section is surgery so more than likely they will want to be in control of everything and keeping things clean is one of them. So , sorry.
Hope things go well, congrats, and Take care!

I don't know. I've had 1 in my life and it was the worst thing I've ever experienced.. and I've had kidney stones... It's just a horrible feeling. I have a low placenta so I might have to have a c-section too.. but at least you will be numb... I know you are worried about a UTI but it's sterile and it probably wouldn't cause you any problems... plus since the baby would be born after that you would prob be able to get something to clear anything up if you got one.

Don't worry about it. I'm sure when you see that baby... all other pain will go away!

Best of luck!

Yes, you wont be able to get up for a couple of hours after your c-section so they need to put in a caterter and you will be numb from the breasts down for quite sometime after and wouldnt be able to know when you need to go!! A catheter will not cause you to get a UTI because after you have the baby they will give you an IV antibiotic. I had 2 c-sec
and one planned for March 10th because I am pregnant with twins. Good Luck and Congratulations!!!!!!

Absolutely. It is surgery, so they have to keep the area as sanitary as possible. They have to remove it within 8 hours after you deliver though, so it's not in very long. I delivered within 15 minutes of being prepped for my c-section and was in recovery within 45 minutes. The most you are looking at is about 9 hours having it in. Let them know about your UTI history when you go in for your c-section. Maybe they can take extra precautions with you. Best of luck.

The spinal can make it so you cannot make yourself pee on command. I imagine if you talk with your doctor they can give you your options.

I have a spinal morphine for my labor (what they generally use for c-section) and for some reason it blocked my brains ability to tell my body to pee. I had to get a catheter. Not a fun thing during active labor and delivery.

Yes, I had a scheduled c-section and I got one, the reason is they drug you u p and your on active drugs for 24 hours after so you wont feel the pain of the incision. After 24 hours they will pull it out and your on your own.
