We had a repair man out to fix our washing machine recently the part was not very expensive £26, but the labour cost was, over £80 for about 15 minutes work.

Question.

What qualifications do you need to be a washing machine repairer.

I think it is identifying the fault is No:1 priority and ordering the correct new part/parts, making sure everything is put back safely with no risk of injury to the user.

Is there any online information, books, courses anybody can recommend.

I am not an electrician but have some knowledge of electrics.

I knew a repair man who worked for one of the branded companies, he had virtually no experience but did have a bit of electrical and mechanical knowledge. He was armed with a tool box and a special manual showing parts, what they were called etc and their use. If ur machine stopped working he looked into his manual possibly in his van to hide his embarrasment and the manual said like this, machine does not empty check pump etc etc get the picture? but today it is now illegal to tamper with gas and electrics and thats wehere corgi and whatever the electricians have to pass to do electrical work legally and professionally and safely. I would think that now goes for appliances. The dealers like hotpoint charge a one off fee regardless of where it needs a fuse or a whole new drum, parts are extra. Because of the hgh cost of obtaining the corgi certificate etc, this is reflected in the repair costs. A lot of first class engineers who had their own buisnesses and had a first class reputation were forced to pack up because of the rules and regs and the high costs of the certificates around £3,00 if I remember for a corgi certificate, thats one hell of a lot of money for a bit of paper, but without these certificates these people cannot legally do such works, and they would have to find approx £3,000 of workjust to pay for the certificates before they start earning money, it would have meant their charges going up sky high, so the ones I know gave it up before going bankrupt.
