I think he should. He is un-arguably one of the greatest defensive shortstops in history, but people point to his hitting numbers as a weakness. If that is the case, then no DH or non-gold glove winning player should ever get into the hall. There can't be a bias towards only hitting - defense is just as important. I'm an Indians fan, and I can tell you that Omar was a BIG reason why they got to two World Series. His hitting numbers were respectful, by the way - he hit close to .300, was a good base stealer, and scored a lot of runs.

I just happened to ask this question 2 weeks ago.I would have to say yes.276 isn't bad and he has 2,500 hits. Not a great or bad hitter just average, but just listen to his fielding stats;11 Gold Gloves(2nd most ever)984 fielding%(best ever for SS).Add that to 330 Stolen bases and you have yourself a hall of famer.I don't think he will get in first ballet because fielding is always overlooked but he will get in maybe 15 years or so after he retires, but desevres to be in 1st ballot.

no way,
others with similar or better stats aren't and most likely won't get in, such as
Alan Trammell: 2293 games, .285 BA, 2365 hits, 1231 runs,
1003 RBI, 185 HR, 236 sb, 6 time all star, 2nd in mvp voting in 1987, mvp of 84 world series, 4 gold gloves, rookie of year and 20 seasons with same team.
If Trammell or Vizquel had won more, or played in NY, they may have had a chance.

I would have to say yes, he has an excellent chance of making it to Cooperstown. With nearly 2500 hits and nearly 1300 runs scored and a .276 lifetime batting average his offense compliments his outstanding defensive skills. Remember, his has 366 stolen bases and over 800 RBI's. Not bad for a lead off or number two hitter.

Looks like Joey didn't do his home work!!

Having seen him play in SF more than 100 times I can state that he should be in the Hall, at least I'd sure like to think he'll make it. He is so professional, dedicated and team- (versus self-) oriented.

Should he get in, yes. Will he probably not. Fielding is almost as important as that guy who sells hot dogs in the stands(no offense meant). If you cant put up the big hitting numbers anymore, noone has even heard of you.

I hope not. Omar is highly over-rated and doesn't compare to Alan Trammell, who hasn't come close to getting in.

Then again, they voted in Ozzie Smith, so he probably will get in.

Hang in there Omar.

Probably not because he doesnt have the hitting numbers. While I admit that he was a great fielder, he wasnt as good as Ozzie Smith, and he definitley wasnt a good enough hitter.
