I am 12 weeks pregnant and probably have the worst breath ever. I have to be extremely careful when I brush my teeth because my gag reflex is in overdrive. Is this a problem for anyone else? It's especially bad in the morning and I can't brush my tongue. This morning I had to sit on the floor because I almost ran to the toilet feeling like I was about to puke. Any suggestions?

Try to breathe out of your nose when you bruch your teeth. I know this seems obvious but most people don't do it. Concentrate on breathing through your nose and this should help ease the gag reflex a bit. I had this problem in both of my pregnancies and my Dr. finally clued me in on this and it helped tremendously! Good luck and congratulations!!

You're normal. I had this same problem with both my pregnancies. Just brush your teeth as best you can because good oral hygiene is especially important during pregnancy and use a little mouth wash. It might help to switch to a milder flavored toothpaste, too. I found that the strong minty ones made me gag more. There are lots of options out there now. I think Crest makes a citrus flavored one. That might help.

Yes, I gag when something goes down my throat too far. I also know how to gag without using a object :D

That was a big part of my morning sickness. It gets a lot better in the 2nd trimester, I promise! Meanwhile...sometimes you'll feel a lot better if you just let yourself throw up (gross as that sounds). Don't worry about your breath... use mouthwash and carry around mints.

I threw up every time I brushed my teeth around 10-16 weeks. it's annoying and feels horrible - but "this too shall pass"

Hang in there.

not really anything I could find to fix it, mine was like that for my first trimester and actually about half way into my 2nd, to handle the bad breathe I used a lot of mouth wash, just be careful with the gargling that tended to get me choked up too...

I can hardly brush my teeth either.

No suggestions here but lots of empathy!
