Please don't try to do that at home - take it to the vet or a professional groomer. If it has severe mats, they can be very difficult to remove without cutting the cat's skin, even if it's under sedation (you shouldn't do sedation at home without a vet's supervision, either). The skin under the mats will be pulled very tight, and may even be irritated or infected and need medical treatment.

Best bet take your cat to a professional groomer and your won't need to get torn up yourself. If you don't know one, ask your vet, they will recommend one for you. They know how to shave them without sedation. Next time try giving your cat a daily brushing and you won't need to shave the cat. Oonce you have it shaved, don't let it outside, the hair is what insulates the body from cold and heat. The cat can get sunburned very easily and caution needs to be taken when letting the cat in front of a window.

I would recommend speaking to your veterinarian. Depending on your cats health and personality, there are different meds that can be given ranging from synthetic hormones to traqualizers and sedation. If you've never groomed your cat before, your vet may also be able to recommend someone who can do that for you. They are often trained or have experience with doing that and will be able to remove the matts with as little stress and risk of injury or cuts as possible

Get a hair clipper and go with the grain. Does your cat have a shedding problem where he/she gets clumps in the coat? This can happen with long haired cats. My brother used to shave his cat because he had this problem.

Take it to the Vet or one person can scruff it and have a nother person to hold the cat by the butt and strech him out like you would hold a fish!!!

With clippers and some tranq.

You'd have to get your sedative from the vet or just have the vet/groomer do ti.
