It can really vary.

In college I rented a nice room witha private entrance, kitchen ect ect that was attached to someones house. All the guy said was give me a security deposit and first months rent and I could move in right away, assuming I signed a 1 year contract. No credit checks, income verificaion, references, ect.

Then you have some that require everything. It really just depends on the rules of the renter.

It depends on what kind of apartment you are looking for, what area you are looking in and how much you are looking to spend. You want to save as much as possible, because most apartment landlords want first and last months rent, as well as a security desposit, which is usually the same amount as the first months rent. Plus if you are going to need furniture, utilities, etc you would be looking at a significant expense. I would definitely suggest researching it carefully, particularlly the area you are looking to live in. Good luck. I've listed a few websites below, that have good tips on renting I would also reccommend searching yahoo or google, using apartment renting or apartments in the search.

As self-employed I'd show tax forms from previous years. Also, you'll need a number of references (2-3).

an application, usually the landlord will provide that, sometimes they do a credit/background check, you usually have to pay a security deposit, the landlord will specify, and depends on the landlord you might need to have renters insurance.

usually landlord will do credit check which will include income verification. oftentimes they don't bother with this, especially in less desireable locations. basically, need security deposit plus first month's rent
