Depends how big your pond is? I had a mesh grill made up to cover mine, after a heron first took an interest in the fish. I was told that herons won't land directly into the water, they have to step up to it?? So why not make the fence a bit higher?

herons need a long landing flight path. they dont just swoop straight down like seabirds. if there are some high walls or trellis etc. fairly near to the pond they cant obtain the long shallow flight down they need. rose trellis or anything similar. this would check them in their descent. herons would maybe only attracted by another plastic heron. even netted they have long pointed beaks and can get fish between the netting. this would only work on a smallish pond of course.

To stop herons getting into your pond and taking your fish, try either putting netting over your pond. Another method is to buy and place a plastic heron near your pond. Herons's like their own individual fishing territories. This should be a detterant.

Placing wire mesh over the pond will deter the herons from getting to your pond, this will also serve as a safety net for babies and small children in case they fall in.

if it is a small decorative pond (like a koi pond) you can buy and install a metal mesh over the pond (I assume you are afraid the heron will eat your koi). For a larger, natural pond, ain't much you can do, heron's will just fly over a fence of ANY height

You can buy a heron scarer. It is a device that fits on the end of a hose. A plastic spike sticks int he ground about 16 ins tall topped by a movement sensor when it senses movement it emits a semi circular spray (adjustable). It is battery operated. Also described as a bird and cat scarer it is made by Aqadistri BV, The Netherlands. more info www.superfish.nl Mine cost £59.95 2years ago. Probably available from your local aquatic supplier.

Why would you want to run the heron out of your pond?

I'd butcher the little sucker myself, but it IS ill-eagle (wish it were
it were dead heron). This summer plan to try the decoy heron
heard it works sometimes because the creatures are territorial.
