I think you're probably talking about Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

What's special about him? Just that he was an advocate for ending the injustices the African-American population was facing at the time. He was a civil rights leader and his methods revolved around those of Mahatma Gandhi.

The differences between him and other groups of the time, like the Black Panthers and Malcolm X were mostly that the other groups preached and eye for an eye, or at least that ACTION needed to be taken. Martin Luther King said that peaceful noncompliance was the key to success.

He's important to America and the quest for freedom. I wonder what he'd say out our educational system today. Its becoming increasingly more segregated again.

Wow! The Rev.Martin Luther King Jr. was an amazing man that not only preached that change must come through non-violent actions and non compliance, he also lived it. This man lived in southern states that at the time were very segregated and very dangerous for a outspoken black man, yet he endured threats, assaults, arrests and injustices of society to further his belief that all humans are created equal and should be treated as such. This country we live in today is a better place for his life and his efforts to further the advancement of people of all colors.

Because of his charisma and ability to address large audiences he is often looked upon as the one individual that embodies the civil rights movement. He is an individual that helped to change the face of America and the way society is formed and very few had done as much before or after him to better society as a whole. His non-violent ways of addressing problems have been imitated around the world and are still in use today.

Martin Luther King was the guy how i guess died so African American could go to schools with other color people. People were racist and african americans were treated badly and they had to sit at the back of the bus and african american kids had like almost broken books and others had pretty good books.

publicity and some strange national guilt complex - i could list 50 or so people who did more and yet no holiday for them

it was the TIMING of what he did i would suppose - and yes he deserves to be honored but so do others who aren't

as for the civil rights movement - can anyone name any of the people who were MURDERED during this period - for helping ( if your old enough you may have seen one of the MOVIES about them ) just their names - no takers I'll bet or how about any of the police who lined the streets so black children could safely walk to school how about their names ? how about the lawyers and members of the legislatures who changed the laws ? And yes they were white but it's not race I'm emphasizing it's PUBLICITY
