Undoubtedly yes, though things are changing a lot these days, it is still a big taboo or a rarity in the middle class, if you live in the oriental society especially in the countryside. Despite all the tall talks, I am yet to find a guy who comes forward to marry a widow or divorcee. (viriginity is still a big thing). What say?

I am not sure the other answers that I find is totally true in India, as yet :-) though you can find some instances of widow remarriage. (forget the guys, I know a couple of females who still hang on to the old memories and dont want to marry again)

In India a widow is presently allowed to marry. Earlier many widows were burnt alive on the pyre (fire) of dead body of her husband. It was a forcible heinous act yet was claimed to be with consent of widow and called a pious act SATI. People used to construct temples in the names of SATI women and to pray. A widow had no share in interitance succession. Now she gets it. SATI is also made an offence during last decade.
Widows should marry and shall be encouraged to keep the society clean from unwed sexual acts.
Islam always encouraged or even directed marriage of widows since it bluntly forbids unwed sexual acts. Its criminal law prescribes for unwed sexual intercourse by a widow the sentence of death by pelting stones. Muslims blindly believe and follow the teachings & commands of Quran and the last Prophet.
