if it's asking for a four digit code, it's most likely the last four digits of your phone number unless you've changed it.

You usually have to contact your service provider to get an unlock code. They may supply it to you free or for a fee.
Alternatively, if you see any dodgy wee corner shops/market stalls dealing in phones, they can usually do it for around a tenner
