At the beginning,Germany was made up out of several smaller states that were all members of the German Confederation.After the Austro-Prusian war(1866),Otto von Bismark,then prime minister,annexed Prussia annexed Schleswig, Holstein, Frankfurt, Hanover, Hesse-Kassel, and Nassau to Prusia.
The Franco-Prusian War(1870) offered Bismark yet another chance;defeated France surrendered Als and part of Lorraine.
After this second war,Otto von Bismark negotiated with the representatives of other German states,so that they agree to the unification of the country.He succeeded and on the 18th July 1871 King Wilhelm became Emperor of Germany,the festivity taking place in the famous Hall of Mirrors in the Versailles Castle.
