El Nino does not influence tides but it does have a strong influence upon the sea level along the west coast. During normal conditions the equatorial trade winds blow across the ocean from east to west literally pushing water and elevating the sea surface along the western boundary of the Pacific ocean. The west coast of South and North America that are in this latitudinal region have lower sea levels than in the Indo - Pacific. When El Nino occurs the trade winds actually reverse direction and the water gets pushed toward these western coastlines. This is also accompanied by severe storms along our west coasts, and damage to coral reefs on the other side of the Pacific as the shallow reef areas become exposed for long periods to the air. El Nino will also change weather in the Atlantic but the sea level influence is minor.

El Nino is a meteorologic phenomena and tides are influenced by the sun and the moon. Any correlation between the two is limited at best.
