Usually more risk then reward. I mean the only reason why rookies are now the highlight of each dunk contest is simply because they usually need that one moment to boost their popularity into stardom such as ur Kobe Bryants, Vince Carters, Jason Richardsons(He is, although he is injured quite often) Now im not saying they lost their dunking skills, ability but these guys now earn so much money that they probably don't think its worth ever going back into the dunk contest to risk losing fans, endorsements etc if they don't win or do something amazing because they have already done it and the pressure is on them to repeat.

On the other hand rookies, earning usually the league minimum or not what you consider a "high-paying contract" in the NBA, most of the time have nothing to lose and a lot to gain. Shoe contracts, free publicity, those are usually the signs of a star in the NBA. David Stern knows this and wants to promote the brand of basketball with new stars to gain new young fans and move on with the new generation.

There are always two givens in the Dunk Contest, the previous champion is in and also a rookie. Most superstars don't want to join probably because there would be too much pressure to do something spectacular and almost everything has been done in the dunk contest already.

No superstars wanna join cuz i think they don't wanna be embarassed by losing. back in the old days MJ and Nique did the NBA Dunk Contest at least 3 times each. Also some of them don't do it the same reason some dont' wanna go to the all-star game, its the only break they get during the season and they would just rather chill with their fam and friends instead of going to a media packed game.

This is a long running tradition in that only young players do the slam dunk contest. Half of the players in it each year aren't even starters on their own team. I'm not sure who chooses the participates. Most superstars don't want to do it since they are already playing in the all-star game and busy leading their teams to the playoffs. So you get players with not much else to do and that want to make a name themselves.

No money in it, plus it is kinds not in style to be in it (None of the big stars do it anymore and havent since the mid 90s)
