We have a 1991 Nissan Sentra and after temprature dropped below 10 F last night the manual stick will not go to any of the gear selections (feels just as if it stuck). The only exception is reverse, when I try to engage that the clutch makes a grinding noise. Any ideas???

ONE MORE THING. I DSCOVERED THAT THE CAR WILL SHIFT IF TURNED OFF, BUT WHEN THE ENGINE IS STARTED THE CLUTCH REFUSES TO ENGAGE.

Almost the linkage but it is Hydraulic,
I have had 6 cars in the shop for bad Master cylinder this week on the clutch. You described it to a "T"
The pedal feels all soft and doesn't really feel like it is doing anything ....Right!
Reverse is not protected on the Nissan. don't grind off too much.

That's a really great description of the problem. It sounds like your linkage needs to be adjusted. Take it to a local (reputable) mechanic. It may just be weather-related. Ice can cause a lot of problems for the underneath side of a vehicle!

That's correct, you can shift into most gears with the engine off. No rotating parts to mesh together means no motion to interfere with gear movement on a shaft.
I'd say your problem is most likely cold-related. If you can get the vehicle somewhere to warm it up, I think the problem will go away.
