If you bought it at Costco, you don't even need a receipt...

I buy all of my electronics there now.

A shop, by law, does not have to give you a receipt. They cannot, by law, insist on seeing a receipt. All you need is proof of purchase. Cheque book stub, credit card statement or even the packaging if it's shop's own brand. The easiest way is to have the receipt.

Also, it may have a guarantee greater than 1 year. Consumer law states it must last a resonable period of time. That's why shops state "This does not affect your statutory rights" when they state a years guarantee. How long would you expect a £30 phone to last? How long would you expect a £300 phone to last? If my £300 phone broke after 18 months, I would be straight back to the shop for a repair, otherwise they can speak to trading standards.

They're entitled to repair the phone at their cost and you be without out for a reasonable period of time, usually 30 days. After this they should be loaning you one or replacing. They're entitled to offer a refund, but not a full one. They're entitled to take off reasonable wear and tear and how long you had it for.

Go in calm, don't shout. Be polite and if you don't get anywhere say "Thank you for help but you've only managed to deal with this to your level of authority, could I speak to a more senior member of staff". If they won't budge, thank them again and explain you need to go down to trading standards as they've breached your statutory rights can could you have a contact name to pass on to trading standards.

I use to work in retail and knew what's what. The genuine customer was sorted straight away, the one who was a grumpy **** meant his complaint took hours/days to resolve.

You need your receipt for the phone,
If you bought it from o2 there should be no problem replacing it.
They would have your details on file and be able to replace it if you turn up at the shop where you bought it.
Please note - you have a legitimate complaint and the phone should be replaced repaired free of charge. Be insistent on your rights but remain polite and calm. It is not the fault of the shop personnel, and they have to follow procedures as laid down by the company.

It depends on why your phone is broken. If it is broken due to your negligence, ie you dropped it or you were messing with the internal mechanism, or because you had it unlocked at another retail outlet to make it sim free, then it probably is not covered under warranty.
If it has just broken of its own accord, whether it be an operating problem or a software fault or just a simple phone fault then your warranty should cover you.
Just take the phone anyway to any O2 shop, along with your receipt/warranty and they will sort it out.

If you have your receipt, and it is still within 1 year, it is still in its warranty period.

BE CAREFUL, though as some shops may lead you to believe that you have to claim your insurance for this type of thing - I know of someone who took their faulty handset back, and before the shop would even consider sending it away, they made her take out insurance, and come back several days later, claiming it had just broke. YOU DO NOT NEED TO CLAIM YOUR INSURANCE IF YOU ARE STILL IN YOUR WARRANTY PERIOD although there may be a charge for repair if the damage is found to be your fault, and not a manufacturing fault, or if they deem the phone to be irrepairable.

If you are that unsure then phone ahead, ask for the persons name and THEN go see them!

Get your receipt handy and any 'contract' you signed. Explaining on the phone will give you the advantage of them not seeing you nervous. You can be stronger this way. If they start trying to upgrade you or change the phone say NO thankyou I am very happy with the phone and service and don't want to replace either. When you go to the shop you will be able to repeat what you said with confidence as you already did it! Good luck!

Check you user manual.. perhaps there is a manufacturer's warranty. Unfortuantely you can not take it back to the store since you purchased the phone about a year ago.

By the way.. phones are getting better and cheaper by the day.. may want to save yourself the hassle and just buy a new one ;)

have you still got your receipt or guarantee you will need prof of when you bought the phone and were you bought it from try ringing them first as you might need extra paper work and there is no good going up to the shop them telling you need something and having to go home and go to shop again

You will need to have the receipt. If you have return it to the store and they will most likely send it away for repair.
