The Systeme Internationale answer is 1000, the popular computer answer is 1024.
Technically, 1 MB = 10^3 KB = 1000 KB
But, 1 MB is often used to mean 2^10 KB = 1024 KB (because computers function in binary and that's a round binary number) - measures based on powers of 2 are more accurately called kibibyte (KiB), mebibyte (MiB), etc.
Sorry for the verbose answer. For everyday purposes the answer is: treat it as 1000.
