There's no "right" answer to this question of course, I'll go with:

LW - Mark Messier: Not his regular position but he can play there for me since nobody else had his combination of skill, teamwork, toughness and longeveity

C - Wayne Gretzky: Greatest hockey player EVER. No, Lemieux was NOT better. Nobody else had 200 points in a season and he did it FOUR TIMES. NOBODY before or since, including Lemieux and Crosby had his gift of anticipating the play

RW - Gordie Howe: He did everything well and played so long.

D - Bobby Orr: Revolutionized the game to make it OK for defenseman to carry the puck and may have been the best skater ever to play.

D - Ray Borque: Did everything well and could play 40 minutes per night if he had to.

G - Martin Brodeur: Has won 3 stanley cups, not a small feat in this age where there are 30 teams and as we speak is carrying an otherwise average Devil's team to the top of the league.

Lots of Honorable mentions:

Forwards: Mario Lemieux, Guy Lafleur, Rocket Richard, Bobby Hull, Ron Francis(probably the most underrated player ever), Mike Bossy, Phil Esposito, Bryan Trottier

Defensemen: Larry Robinson, Doug Harvey

Goalies: Patrick Roy, Jacques Plante

Some people who will probably get mention that I would NOT agree with:

Marcel Dionne - Brought very little else to the table besides scoring, disappeared in the playoffs, and was not on as bad a team as everyone thinks.

Gil Perreault - Played no defense at all, and was not a good playoff performer either

Paul Coffey - Defense was laughable, and if he was so good, why was everyone in a hurry to trade him? Probably the most overrated player in history.

Grant Fuhr - Not a bad Goalie, but takes off a little pressure when you're on the highest scoring team in NHL history.

Ken Dryden - Outstanding Goalie as well, but played behind the best defense in NHL history.

Nicklas Lidstrom - Probably the best defenseman today, but skills do NOT match Borque, let alone Orr.

Sidney Crosby - VERY premature. Ask me in 10 years. Or wait at least 5.

C-Wayne Gretzky
LW-Mark Messier
RW-Mario Lemieux
D-Bobby Orr
D-Ray Bourque
G-Patrick Roy

You can't have a line with Gretzky and Lemieux. No two players have been as dominant in hockey. It's hard to determine whether guys from a different generation (Gordie Howe for example) could have stood the tests of later generations so I'll allow for other ideas on who would work better on a line with Lemieux and Gretzky.

an all time list is just impossible. you're talking over a hundred years of history and hundreds of great players. if i had to pick just in my lifetime, it's difficult enough. my earliest memories are of just before the 72 series with the soviets.

so my all time list would be lw-gordie howe, rw-mike bossy, c-wayne gretzky, d-bobby orr, d-larry robinson and g-vladislav tretiak.

my favourites as a kid included dave keon, yvan cournoyer, guy lafleur, denis savard, borje salming, tony esposito and mike palmateer. nowadays my favourites are brendan shanahan, jarome iginla, nicklas lidstrom, teemu selanne, joe sakic, roberto luongo and milla kiprusoff.

no sid the kid but only bc, as pathetic as it sounds, i haven't seen him play other than in highlights.
