At spreading ridges, or similar extensional boundaries, earthquakes are shallow, aligned strictly along the axis of spreading, and show an extensional mechanism. Earthquakes in extensional environments tend to be smaller than magnitude 8.

Diverging plate boundaries are at the edges of crustal plates moving away from one another. This produces volcanic eruption as magma seeps out into the gap that is left, mostly underwater, but seen also at the surface where the activity produces small islands, eg Iceland - at the northern end of the mid-Atlantic diverging plate boundary. Small earthquakes can also occur on these boundaries at transform faults which cross the boundary.
