It is not only in the UK. CO means commercial, just like com. Here is a list of suffixes that have .co.xx in them. There are many countries that do this same sort of thing. http://www.siteadvisor.com/map/co

co stands for commercial domain in the U.K. It just a step to distinguish a U.K. domain from the rest of the world. They use this instead of .com.
