Because he's not going back in time. He is either seeing the future or traveling to different dimensions, IMO.

SPOILERS - Don't read THIS answer if you didn't see the 2/14 episode....
He can't go back in time - he sees forward in time. Do you remember the jewelry shop lady telling him about what was coming for the guy in the red shoes? That was forward-looking - she could warn him but eventually his number would be up from something else. Desmond saved Charley not by going back in time but because he foresaw the lightning and saved him, and then the drowning and saved him... but he told Charley he can't stop it forever.
As for the show, you and others here are right - it's getting to be like X-Files and Twin Peaks all over again, lots of loose ends and loss of a story arc.

It was his destiny to push the button. They hinted that the universe will self-correct when something that is destined has been changed. He was destined not to push the button but to turn the key and no matter how much he tries, Charley will still die.

Des obviously wasn't in control of his time-travelling in the last episode... He was just as confused as we are. And he didn't travel back in time to save Charlie... He apparently had a 'flash' of something that was coming in the future.. a precognition.. a premonition.. whatever you want to call it... concerning Charlie's 'accidents' and Locke's speech... But it seems quite clear that he has no control over either the apparent time-travel or his 'visions'.

because if he really did go back in time, he didn't have any control of that. So, if he really is now back on the island, he has no way to go back again. Besides that, nothing on this show makes much sense, if you try to put all these pieces together, it will drive you nuts

I dont think he can go back in time anytime he wants just the one time after he turns the key..after that he is able to see flashes of his upcoming life

He doesn't go BACK IN TIME. He sees the future because his entire life flashed before him.
Do you watch the show? If so, do you pay attention?

The show is getting loopier every episode. They need to start tying up some loose ends before they begin hemhorraging viewers left and right.

in their efforts to think of ways to keep this show going for many seasons they are losing the plot entirely and ensuring their own doom. This is the writers by the way, not the characters.
