Try a thermite reaction, which can be synthesized using ordinary household materials. Be warned, though, that a thermite reaction is one of the most exothermic reactions in existence. Here's how to proceed:
You'll need some aluminum and iron oxide. Ground-up aluminum foil is a good source for the aluminum; try scraping a rusty surface to gather some iron oxide.
Mix the two powders thoroughly. Thermite reactions require high energy inputs, so you'll need something extremely hot. A firecracker or a sparkler will do.

Since it is a science project you need to do more than just blow up something. Take video pictures of different sizes of explosion (or look at debri pattern) , then measure the width and height of the cloud or debri scatter and graph it vs explosion size . Estimate the functional fit (linear, quadratic, etc)

Solar power, get several curved makeup mirrors available at the drug store, arrange them so the focus the light on a single point, place an egg in the middle of the mirrors and see how long it takes to explode. Also pop corn, hot dogs, a cup of water, fun things that you can heat up and make a mess.
