If the guy was a Republican, it would have been shouted from the rooftops. I couldn't find a single story that identified him as a Democrat. Liberal press? YOU HAD BETTER BELIEVE IT!!!

Because liberals and Democrats, on average, have a much more permissive attitude towards sexuality, and less respect for the obligations of marriage. For this reason the fact that Newsom is a Democrat is fairly consistent with his behavior. Republicans, on average, espouse more concern for 'family values' and the supposed sanctity of marriage, so when they fall short of such principles it is more noteworthy.
Which isn't to say the press doesn't have a strong liberal bias - they do. But face it, some Republicans are kind of asking for it.

Oh, now come on! Do you really believe that the Mayor of San Francisco could possibly be a Republican? That he is a Democrat was taken for granted. And, yeah, what's worse? Having a fling with a woman (she was the one who was married, btw) or moving your mistress into your home (Gracie Mansion) while your wife and children are still there? I notice NO ONE is mentioning that now that Rudy is running. And I don't remember anyone shouting from the rooftops when Newt Gingrich went into his wife's hospital room and gave her divorce papers...do you? And what do you think of Rudy and Newt's behavior?

Excuse me, but Rudy Giuliani left his last wife to be with his current one. I don't remember the press having a field day over a Republican politician screwing around on his wife.
